Myth #1: Investing sustainably leads to lower returns and underperformance. Fact: Not necessarily. Sustainable investments can generate comparable returns to a traditional benchmark. One of the most common misbeliefs surrounding sustainable investing is that it generates lower returns. With years of performance data now available, the numbers show that sustainable strategies often perform in line with—or in some cases, outperform—a traditional benchmark. From April 2014 to March 2024, MSCI ESG Equity Leaders (which focuses on companies with strong ESG scores) delivered higher returns compared to the broader MSCI World Index. There are two reasons why we have conviction in sustainable investing’s performance:
Focusing on material environmental, social and governance—related risk: Extensive data, corporate disclosure and regulatory report on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues give investors new insights into how well companies are managing risk. When done right, a focus on key ESG issues can potentially lower investment risk. Financially material ESG factors such as human capital management and land use could have significant effects—both positive and negative—on a company’s business model and value drivers. Myth #2: Sustainable investing doesn’t drive real change.

Identifying growth-oriented megatrends: Megatrends are powerful influences that can affect the economy and society. A relevant example is the clean energy transition, which includes wind and solar, smart grids and energy storage. Identifying and investing in these megatrends may provide long-term growth opportunities as these trends reshape the market.
Myth #2: Sustainable investing doesn’t drive real change. Fact: It has, and it can. You can have a voice through active managers and corporate engagement strategies. Companies often have a global influence, sometimes for the better (by being a good employer) and sometimes for the worse (by polluting a local ecosystem). It’s possible to sponsor specific causes through your investments and potentially impact company behavior.
Let’s dive deeper with a real-life case study. An investment manager holds a leading U.S. manufacturer of cement in its sustainable portfolio. However, it is the portfolio’s largest carbon emitter.
Manufacturing construction supplies is a carbon-intensive process. The transformation of calcium carbonate in limestone into calcium oxide is a vital step to produce “clinker”—a component in cement—which is responsible for about 60% of total cement-manufacturing emissions.
Increasing use of alternative fuels. Myth #3: Sustainable investing is solely focused on climate.
Fact: Social and governance factors, in addition to the environment, are critical to sustainable investments.
Climate change and other environmental concerns are a focus for many sustainable investors. However, social and governance issues—the S and G in ESG—are top of mind for clients as well, and they merit consideration in the analysis of companies and funds. Arguably, every investment should focus on the G—sound governance practices are critical to the long-term success of businesses. And social issues such as diversity practices, and employee health and safety are increasingly seen as important in company analysis.
In fact, E, S and G issues are often interrelated. For example, water stress is not only a risk to ecosystems, but it also affects human health and well-being. It can intensify social and political fragilities in emerging economies, such as the Middle East and North Africa.
Reducing clinker content,
Employing carbon capture, utilization and storage technology.
The manufacturer has a 20% carbon intensity reduction goal by 2030 versus a 2011 baseline. To encourage further change, the manager will continue proposing a new science-based emissions target.
This is just one example of how sustainable investing can help drive change. By investing in actively managed strategies that engage directly with companies, it’s possible to drive positive change over time.

What is a Chartered SRI Counselor™?

Green bonds and other debt instruments geared toward sustainability are becoming an important part of global fixed income markets. More and more, investors look to align their portfolios with their financial goals and internationally recognized sustainability goals such as The Paris Agreement or UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
So, what are green bonds? And how do they relate to – and differ from – social, sustainability and sustainability-linked bonds?
First, it’s important to distinguish between use of proceeds bonds and sustainability-linked bonds.
Use of proceeds bonds, as the name suggests, fund projects with dedicated environmental and, or social benefits.
Sustainability-linked bonds do not finance particular projects but rather finance the general functioning of an issuer that has explicit sustainability targets that are linked to the financing conditions of the bond.
These bonds are devoted to financing new and existing projects or activities with positive environmental impacts. We believe impactful green bonds should be issued in line with the Green Bond Principles (GBP) from the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), a set of voluntary guidelines that promote more transparent, unified reporting on bonds’ environmental objectives and estimated impact. In fact, ICMA is relevant for green, social or sustainability-linked bonds, since ICMA provides guidelines for all forms of such bonds.
Examples of project categories eligible for green bond issuance include renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean transportation, green buildings, wastewater management and climate change adaption.
Social Bonds
Use of proceeds
To qualify as a social bond, the proceeds must finance or refinance social projects or activities that achieve positive social outcomes and/or address a social issue. In many cases, social projects are aimed at target populations such as those living below the poverty line, marginalized communities, migrants, unemployed, women and/or sexual and gender minorities, people with disabilities, and displaced persons.
Similar to green bonds, issuance of social bonds is oriented by a set of voluntary guidelines – in this case the Social Bond Principles (SBP) from ICMA – aimed toward improved disclosure and transparency in the social bond market. The SBP outline best practices for issuing a social bond; they also arm investors with the information necessary to evaluate the social impact of their investments.
Sustainability Bonds
Sustainability bonds are issues where proceeds are used to finance or re-finance a combination of green and social projects or activities. These bonds can be issued by companies, governments and municipalities, as well as for assets and projects and should follow the Sustainability Bond Guidelines from ICMA, which are aligned with both the GBP and SBP. They can be unsecured, backed by the creditworthiness of the corporate or government issuer, or secured with collateral on a specific asset.
Examples of project categories eligible for sustainability bonds include those in the green and social bonds categories.
Sustainability-linked Bonds
Sustainability-linked Bonds –such as key performance indicator (KPI)-linked or SDG-linked Bonds – are structurally linked to the issuer’s achievement of climate or broader SDG goals, such as through a covenant linking the coupon of a bond. In this case, progress, or lack thereof, toward the SDGs or selected KPIs then results in a decrease or increase in the instrument’s coupon. These bonds can play a key role in encouraging companies to make sustainability commitments at the corporate level, particularly through aligning to the UN SDGs or Paris Agreement.
History of Green Bonds:
In 2007, the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change published a report linking human action to global warming, which added further weight to the growing body of data. collaborated to establish a process for debt markets to be part of the solution. To ensure investment and capital-raising for sustainability projects materially advanced positive environmental outcomes, a set of eligibility criteria was determined. And, in 2007-2008, the European Investment Bank and the World Bank successfully issued the first green bonds. Green bonds are debt securities issued explicitly for environmental or climate-related projects.
Unlabeled green bonds are debt securities of issuers fundamentally aligned to low carbon products and services, such as a renewable energy company or a municipal water system improvement bond, rather than a certified green bond.

Sustainable investing spans a wide range of products and asset classes, including equities, fixed income and alternative investments, such as private equity, venture capital and real estate. The Morgan Stanley Institute for Sustainable Investing conducted a study titled: Sustainable Reality Analyzing the Risks and Returns of Sustainable Funds. Research was conducted on nearly 11,000 funds from 2004 to 2018 which showed that there is no financial trade-off in the returns of sustainable funds compared to traditional funds, and they demonstrated lower downside risk.

Can you invest sustainably without sacrificing returns?

The origins of sustainable and responsible investing (SRI) may date back to the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). In 1758, the Quaker Philadelphia Yearly Meeting prohibited members from participating in the slave trade—buying and/or selling humans.
One of the most articulate early adopters of SRI was John Wesley (1703–1791), one of the founders of Methodism. Wesley's sermon "The Use of Money" outlined his basic tenets of social investing: not to harm your neighbor through your business practices. His famous words - Gain all you can, Save all you can, Give all you can, are the foundation to modern day Sustainable Investing. Investors were also urged avoid "sinful" companies, such as those associated with products such as firearms, liquor, and tobacco.
An iconic image from the era was a picture in June 1972 of a naked nine-year-old girl, Phan Thị Kim Phúc, screaming and running towards a photographer, her back burning from the napalm dropped on her village. That photograph channeled particular outrage against Dow Chemical, the manufacturer of napalm, and prompted protests across the country against Dow Chemical and other companies seen as profiting from the Vietnam War. Many investors consider effects of global climate change a significant business and investment risk. CERES was founded in 1989 by Joan Bavaria and Dennis Hayes, coordinator of the first Earth Day, as a network for investors, environmental organizations, and other public interest groups interested in working with companies to address environmental concerns.
Sustainable investors use several strategies to maximize financial return and attempt to maximize social good. These strategies seek to create change by shifting the cost of capital down for sustainable firms and up for the non-sustainable ones.
Positive investing is the new generation of socially responsible investing. It involves making investments in activities and companies believed to have a positive social impact. Positive investing suggested a broad revamping of the industry's methodology for driving change through investments. Positive investing goes beyond traditional socially responsible investing by not only avoiding harmful industries but actively seeking out and supporting companies and projects that create measurable positive social and environmental impacts. This approach includes investments in areas such as renewable energy (e.g., solar and wind power projects), affordable housing developments, education technology startups, healthcare innovations, and sustainable agriculture initiatives. These investments aim to generate both financial returns and tangible benefits for society and the environment. This investment approach allows investors to positively express their values on corporate behavior issues such as social justice and the environment through stock selection – without sacrificing portfolio diversification or long-term performance. Positive screening pushes the idea of sustainability, not just in the narrow environmental or humanitarian sense, but also in the sense of a company's long-term potential to compete and succeed. In 2015, Morgan Stanley conducted a review of 10,000 funds and concluded "strong sustainability" investments outperformed weak sustainability investments, tackling the idea of a trade-off between positive impact and financial return. The Global Impact Investing Network's 2015 report on benchmarks and returns in impact investing in private equity and venture capital found market-rate or market-beating returns were common in impact investments.
Sustainable and responsible investing is a global phenomenon. With the international scope of business itself, social investors frequently invest in companies with international operations. As international investment products and opportunities have expanded, so have international SRI products. The ranks of social investors are growing throughout developed and developing countries. In 2006, the United Nations Environment Program launched its Principles for Responsible Investment which provide a framework for investors to incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors into the investment process. PRI has more than 1,500 signatories managing more than US$60 trillion of assets.
