What is the Electrify Everything Movement?
The concept is simple: there should be a reliance on renewable sources of energy to produce the electricity needed to continue living our everyday lives. In the United States, that means that the country has to figure out a way to produce six times as much low-carbon electricity than the current levels today.
Is mass scale electrification truly possible? The short answer: yes. To effectively transition toward an electric future, cities and countries across the world have largely relied on funding, people power, and intellectual capital. In reality, the movement has already taken off. In the United States, billions of dollars are being used to electrify public transportation systems. Globally, there is a positive trend in the uptake of electric vehicles (EVs).
Electrification on a Global Level
Countries across the globe are elevating their efforts to electrify the way their citizens navigate their lives. Colombia, for example, has been trying to acquire financing to electrify their public transportation systems. In India, the world’s largest democracy, it is expected that railways will be electrified by 2024.
Governments are clearly looking to electrify their consumption, especially as regulation and investments continue to sway in the direction of electrification and renewable energy. In accordance with a more sustainable, electric future, the European Union recently introduced new Sustainability Reporting Standards for businesses. The aspiration to transition towards electrification coupled with government support and regulation highlight a boon for the movement and the opportunities for investment it brings.
Electrification as an Investment
Innovation, financing, and other investment opportunities will continue to shape the way toward a more electric life. The movement will only continue to accelerate as governments, consumer preferences, and other factors become involved. According to a report from JP Morgan Chase, about three quarters of investors are now interested in sustainable investing. Financial institutions are taking these consumer preferences very seriously. A report from PwC similarly showed the increased interest in ESG investments and predicts that European-based ESG funds will increase from 5.1tn in 2022 to 7.9tn in 2025.
